Suse 9.0 and laptops
07/11/2018 9:30
Hi guys I'm new to Linux and have a couple of questions before I buy a new system torun Suse 9.0 on.

1) Is there any truth in a friend's assertion that you can sell back WindowsXP licenses to Microsoft and they are obliged to provide a refund? Most newlaptops come with this rubbish.

2) Does Suse pose problems in terms of getting Radeon graphics cards towork, touchpads recognised etc. I am aware of the Winmodem problem, is aserial modem the best choice for those without Broadband / ADSL modems? All help appreciated, cheers!

It can sometimes beeasier in terms of support, upgrading the laptop's BIOS, that sort ofthing to keep a small installation of Windows on the machine. It's notas if you have to use it on a regular basis. You can use something likePartition Magic to shrink the Windows partition and create a nice bigone for Linux.

Again, it really depends on the laptop you buy. You might want toconsider using SuSE 9.1, also. I have an IBM Thinkpad X31 and while9.0 was very good, 9.1 was better in that my Atheros wireless wasrecognized and worked out of the box (no need for the Linuxant driverwrapper I used in 9.0). I've been told the modem works oob too, although I've never used it. No problems with any other hardware, either.

HP is making laptops with Linux preinstalled, which might be of interestto you. Here are a few links that might be useful: http://www.linux-laptop.net/http://tuxmobil.org/index.html Malke
